You have been refused a protection visa before

My visa expires today. Can you still lodge my protection visa?
Yes, if you contact us straight away. A valid protection visa application can be lodged on the day your visa expires, as long as it is lodged before your visa ends. Send us your expiry date now and we will check you can apply and lodge it today.
Will I get a bridging visa when I lodge a protection visa?
You will usually be granted a Bridging visa A if you lodge a valid protection visa application while holding a substantive visa. It starts when your current visa ends and lets you stay in Australia while your application is decided. See Protection Visa Bridging Visa.
Can I lodge now and add my full statement later?
Yes. Your full statement and supporting evidence can be added after lodgement. The main reasons you fear harm should be in the application from the start, because claims raised much later can be questioned.
Can I work after lodging a protection visa?
A Bridging visa A granted with a protection visa application usually sets out whether you can work. Check the conditions in your bridging visa grant letter, and we will check them with you.
Can I apply for protection if my visa has already expired?
Yes, you can still apply, but you will be unlawful until you are granted a bridging visa. Get advice the same day. See Visa Overstay and Unlawful Status Lawyers.
Can I apply again if my protection visa was refused?
Usually not. If your protection visa was refused since you last arrived in Australia, you generally cannot make a new application unless the Minister allows it. You may still be able to apply to the ART. See Urgent ART Visa Refusal Applications.
Do I need documents to prove my claims?
