Condition 8503 stops you lodging a partner visa in Australia until the Department waives it, and a waiver is only granted where circumstances beyond your control have changed since your visa was granted.
You have lived together for less than 12 months
De facto couples usually need 12 months of living together when they lodge. Registering your relationship with a state or territory can count instead, but registration takes time to process.
You are on a tourist or student visa
You can usually lodge an onshore partner visa while on a tourist or student visa, as long as there is no condition 8503 and you lodge before the visa ends.
You have had a visa refused in Australia
A previous refusal can limit which visas you can apply for while in Australia, so it must be checked before a partner visa is lodged. See Partner Visa Refusals.
Your visa has already expired

Will I get a bridging visa when I lodge my partner visa?

Can I lodge now and send relationship evidence later?
You can lodge your partner visa now and upload most relationship evidence after lodgement. What must be right on the day is your eligibility to apply, the correct application and full payment of the charge.
Can I travel overseas after lodging my partner visa?
A Bridging visa A does not let you leave and return to Australia. To travel while your partner visa is processed, you need to apply for and be granted a Bridging visa B before you leave.
Can I work after lodging my partner visa?
A Bridging visa A granted with an onshore partner visa application usually lets you work. Check the conditions in your bridging visa grant letter.
